Fraud can occur in many ways and at different levels. Businesses which are victims of fraud may want to recover sums lost, via recovery proceedings or from insurance policies; set in place better controls to prevent further loss, and to set an example to others that fraud will not be ignored. Our extensive general commercial experience and specific fraud investigations experience can be applied to most fraud situations to assist the business.
We investigated the sudden and significant reduction in gross profit margin at a manufacturing business. The concern was that in one of the newly acquired divisions, a member of staff was manipulating the figures to hide a procurement fraud. Our investigations found that management's concerns were unfounded and what had happened was the combination of newly acquired divisions with the original business has led to a dilution of the overall margin achieved.
The finance director of a family business was accused of fraud by the shareholders. It was alleged that he has abused his position by utilising company funds to renovate his house and that he covered the theft by falsifying entries in the accounts of the company. We were instructed by his solicitors to investigate his actions and the accounting entries, and provide an explanation for his actions which might assist in his defence. We identified that a proportion of the alleged theft has been disclosed as a benefit in kind on his P11D, which partially mitigated the allegation of tax fraud.
